Biography

Bob Miller- Banjo

Bob has a love of Bluegrass music that goes back to his childhood days. His father, Robert Miller Jr. was a hard driving banjo player who had Earl Scruggs, Don Reno and Sonny Osborne playing on the record player in the house. Bob remembers listening to this music and at the age of 12 he began his banjo playing by mimicking his father and these banjo legends. As his playing evolved Bob heard Bobby Thompson, Bill Keith, Alan Munde, Tony Trishka and Bela Fleck. All these great musicians have had a positive influence on his playing style. It was during these years that Bob was befriended by banjo legend, Eddy Shelton. Eddy helped Bob develop his talents to the point he was considered a talent in the Bluegrass music circles.

At the age of 17 Bob and his twin brother Steve were hired by Gene Newby and the Round Mountain Boys. This began Bob's professional career as a musician. He traveled throughout the Midwest and Southern United States playing the music he loved. After several years on the road Bob decided he was ready to settle down and he returned home to the Ozarks.

Bob and Steve have an interesting story that led them to meet Berry & John Wynn Jr. Bob said when he was 16 he and Steve had gone to a local Bluegrass festival to jam with some friends. As they returned home late in the night they dropped off their friends and somehow Bob ran over his father's banjo with the car. He and Steve went home not expecting to live through the day once his father found out about the banjo. However his Dad's only words to him were "get it fixed." This led him to the best instrument repair man in the Midwest, John Wynn. John repaired the banjo and the Miller brothers became acquainted with Berry & John Jr. These four began playing music together and soon formed the orginal Fly By Night Band.

Bob has returned to the music he loves; Bluegrass. He invites you to share this music with Fly By Night.
